Deforestation is a state policy in Bahia, study shows.

Between 2007 and 2021, the state authorized the clearing of 992.587 hectares of native vegetation; this number is equivalent to 32 cities the size of Salvador. Western Bahia accounts for 80% of the deforestation authorizations. Deforestation authorizations have been issued by the state's environmental agency.

Warning: Cerrado at risk

According to MapBiomas Alerta, the Cerrado is the biome with the second highest rate of deforestation in Brazil, second only to the Pantanal, which exceptionally faced an unprecedented tragedy due to fires in 2020.
