This book brings together stories told by people from different generations of the Awá Guajá people about their knowledge of bees and honey. Written in Guajá and Portuguese, these narratives aim, among other things, to contribute to the production of educational materials for Awá indigenous schools, strengthening the use of their mother tongue while supporting the learning of Portuguese.
Another important motivation is to make accessible to the outside public the profound knowledge that the Awa Guajá possess about a significant number of bee species and their characteristics. Therefore, before reading the stories, it is useful to briefly present the cultural and linguistic perspective of the Awa Guajá on the bees and honeys found in their territory—the Amazon region of Maranhão. The goal is to offer the reader essential elements for a better understanding of the texts that make up this collection.
