Pasture Funds and Enclosures: a collective tradition that keeps the Cerrado alive!

With over 300 years of history, the backlands and backlands communities of western Bahia are known for their way of life integrated into the Cerrado and for raising cattle on collective lands. In 2024, Bahian cattle ranchers gathered for a workshop to self-map their territories. The activity was organized by the Clemente Pasture Fecho Small Farmers Community Association (ACCFC), with support from the Cerrados Institute (IC) and the Society, Population and Nature Institute (ISPN). This collective mapping is essential to increase visibility and strengthen the guarantee, monitoring, and protection of these communities' territories. The publication “Automapping of backlands and pasture closures in western Bahia” explains this process.
