The 9th Meeting and Fair of the Peoples of the Cerrado will bring together more than 500 representatives of traditional peoples and communities in Brasília to draw attention to the threats faced by the Biome and to give voice and visibility to its peoples, also through cultural presentations and a fair open to the public with socio-biodiversity products.
Brasilia will host the ninth edition of the Cerrado Peoples' Meeting and Fair, which will take place from September 11th to 14th at the Funarte Cultural Complex. The theme is: For a Living Cerrado: diversities, territories and democracyThe meeting features a program primarily focused on discussing priority issues concerning the Biome and its peoples, and serves as a space dedicated to the diversity of voices, cultures, and ways of life of the peoples, traditional communities, and family farmers who live in the Biome. More than 500 participants are expected from the 12 states where the Brazilian savanna is present – Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Distrito Federal, Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Paraná, Rondônia, Tocantins, Bahia, Maranhão, and Piauí.
Among the highlights of the Meeting is the traditional Log Race, held on the Esplanade of Ministries in front of the National Congress, followed by the 'Seminar to Debate the Importance of Peoples and Communities for the Conservation of the Cerrado', which will be held on September 11, National Cerrado Day, at 13:30 pm, in the Nereu Ramos Auditorium, Annex II, of the Chamber of Deputies, in partnership with the Environment and Sustainable Development Committee and Ecocâmara.
On this occasion, the National Campaign in Defense of the Cerrado will deliver a public petition with more than half a million signatures to encourage the Chamber of Deputies to vote for the approval of PEC 504/2010, whose objective is to transform the Cerrado and Caatinga into National Heritage, aiming at reducing deforestation and preserving the peoples and ways of life of the Biomes.
The official opening of the event will take place at 18 PM, also on September 11th, at the Funarte Plínio Marcos Theater.
On September 12th, the seminar 'Cerrado: What kind of defense do we want?' will bring together representatives of traditional peoples and communities, socio-environmental organizations, and researchers at the Funarte Cultural Complex. On September 13th, the Cerrado Network, organizer of the Cerrado Peoples' Meeting and Fair, will hold a General Assembly.
Throughout the event, there will be themed workshops, cultural attractions, and a fair featuring various products from the Cerrado region, such as handicrafts, cosmetics, sweets, savory snacks, beverages, cured meats, and herbal remedies, all sourced from the Cerrado. The activities of the 9th Meeting and Fair of the Peoples of the Cerrado are free and open to the public.
Drawing attention to and discussing conservation strategies for the Cerrado based on the lifestyles of traditional peoples and communities is fundamental, since the biome is currently the most threatened in the country. More than half of the Cerrado's original vegetation has already been deforested. This biome, the second largest in Brazil, occupying 24% of the entire national territory, concentrates 30% of the country's biodiversity and 5% of the planet's biodiversity. Furthermore, eight of Brazil's twelve hydrographic regions are located in the Cerrado, supplying six of the country's eight major hydrographic basins. For example, three of Brazil's main aquifers are located in the Cerrado: Bambuí, Urucuia, and Guarani.
