Last Friday (January 26th), ISPN held a showcase of Eco-social Projects in partnership with SGP, GEF, and UNDP, at the Cerrado Center of Excellence – Cerratenses/Brasília Botanical Garden. The showcase was part of the program for the third recomposition meeting of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), held in Brasília this week.
The event included participants from 7 countries that make up the GEF, who had the opportunity to learn about four Brazilian experiences supported by the Small Ecossocial Projects Program (PPP-ECOS/SGP), which develop projects focused on environmental conservation, the sustainable use of native biodiversity, and the socio-economic development of traditional peoples and family farmers.
The experiences of APROSPERA, which, in partnership with the Sálvia Institute, develops a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) initiative in the Federal District, were presented; as were those of the Sustentar Institute and Quilombo Pontinha, which are organizing production chains based on native fruits as an alternative to the disordered exploitation of the giant earthworm in the Paraopeba-MG region; the Casa da Mulher do Nordeste, which has a project to implement agroecological stoves and wastewater reuse systems, investing in the health and food security of family farmers in the Pajeú region of Pernambuco; and AGRODÓIA, which is developing an experience in processing native fruits and developing products for the full and agroecological use of conventional and unconventional foods in the Chapada do Araripe region of Pernambuco.
Finally, all participants were invited for a reconnaissance tour through the lush Cerrado of the Brasília Botanical Garden, where they could see up close and learn a little about ecological aspects, its importance in the national context, and the threats faced by the biome.
During the break, coffee was served by the Cooperativa Central do Cerrado (also a beneficiary of the PPP-ECOS/SGP), which offers a mix of products prepared with ingredients from the Cerrado region and family farming.
Our thanks to the participants of the Project Showcase, especially the exhibitors who traveled to Brasília specifically to attend the event.
