The largest meeting of Brazil's indigenous peoples will be online

By the team from the Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (APIB)

To address the threats posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the 16th edition of the Free Land Camp (ATL) will take place virtually between April 27th and 30th.

The Free Land Camp (ATL) is an event where Indigenous peoples from all over the country gather to strengthen the struggle and resistance of the Indigenous movement. This year, the Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (APIB) is calling for a virtual mobilization to hold the 16th edition of the ATL. Faced with the new threat posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the increase in invasions of Indigenous territories, and the rise in assassinations and criminalization of leaders, the virtual format of the meeting aims to raise awareness of the real possibility of a new genocide and denounces the Bolsonaro government's negligence in guaranteeing the protection of our ancestral peoples.

The event's program began today, the 27th, at 9 am, and among the broadcasts are meetings, gatherings, live streams, shamanic rituals, traditional songs and dances, a showcase of indigenous films, debates among women of different ethnicities, as well as panels with prominent leaders, indigenous rights activists, anthropologists, and other interactions that connect people from all over Brazil in the online environment.

In the panel discussions, the themes vary between “Indigenous Health and Institutional Racism”, “Indigenous Peoples in Times of Coronavirus”, “LGBTQ+ Indigenous Agenda”, “Addressing Climate Change, Increased Deforestation and the Impact in the Post-Pandemic Period”, “Indigenous Rights, Violations and Authoritarianism”, “The Migration Processes of Indigenous Peoples in Acre and Covid-19”, “Stories about the First Land Reclamations in Southern Brazil”, “International Roundtable”, among many others.

At a time when social isolation encourages criminal invasions by loggers, miners, missionaries, and land grabbers into Indigenous Lands, when violence and attacks on territories are only increasing, and the federal government is brazenly dismantling important institutions in the defense of Indigenous peoples, such as IBAMA and FUNAI; APIB and MNI (National Indigenous Mobilization) call upon Brazilian society to participate in ATL 2020, which represents the struggle and resistance of Indigenous peoples in Brazil.

“The warning has been given, the indigenous struggle is urgent, and society needs to support this cause, which belongs to all of us,” urges Sônia Guajajara, coordinator of APIB.

The event is organized by APIB and its grassroots organizations together with the National Indigenous Mobilization (MNI) – and the organizations that comprise it.

ISPN, which has always stood by the indigenous cause, has been supporting this important moment for the native peoples and for the Brazilian population.
