Registration is now open for the Social Justice Philanthropy Network's 10th Anniversary Seminar

Entries are now open for the Philanthropy Network for Social Justice 10th Anniversary Seminar. Scheduled for September 20th and 21st in São Paulo, the meeting will bring together actors from the field of national and international philanthropy to discuss the importance of donations to civil society and the role of philanthropy in social justice.

The event celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Philanthropy Network for Social Justice in Brazil and focuses on democracy, community philanthropy, social justice, and human rights. The program includes panels, panel discussions, and workshops on the contribution of community philanthropy and social justice to the promotion of socio-environmental and human rights, and democracy in Brazil.

The proposed topics include Philanthropy and the Political Landscape and Philanthropy of the Future: Decolonization and Democratization of Access to Rights and Resources. Workshops and thematic roundtables organized by the network's member organizations and partners, the launch of research and publications in the field, and meetings of international alliances and programs related to philanthropy in South-South cooperation are also planned.

The event will also be a space for the launch of the mapping of independent community funds and foundations in Brazil, prepared by the Network in partnership with ponteAponte, which seeks to understand the field of independent and community philanthropy at the local and national level and identify initiatives that donate resources to organizations, groups, collectives and civil society leaders who work in the field of promoting and defending socio-environmental, human, racial, gender and citizenship rights at their intersections.

The Philanthropy, Social Justice, Civil Society and Democracy Seminar is free, with part of the program being broadcast live (online).

"Innovation, Technologies, and Vulnerabilities: Strengthening Communities and the Fight for Socio-Environmental Justice" is the theme of the panel organized by ISPN for the ten-year seminar of the Philanthropy Network for Social Justice. Four initiatives and technologies/platforms will be presented, dedicated to addressing the problems and providing solutions to marginalization, degrading conditions, and risk exposure among the most vulnerable, recognizing that issues related to social and economic inequalities are intertwined with environmental issues and the guarantee of human rights.

These initiatives are: the Tô no Mapa app; the ICOM Community Bank; the Suindara Program; and the Tamo de Olho initiative.

The panel will take place on September 21st, at 14 pm.

Low-intensity donation culture in Brazil

Corporate philanthropy—involving companies, institutes, and foundations they create—is a significant sector of the Brazilian philanthropic ecosystem, given its resource mobilization capacity. According to the 2021 Global Solidarity Ranking—developed by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) in partnership with IDIS—Brazil ranked 54th out of 114 countries, rising 14 positions compared to 2018. In 2020, the sector mobilized R$6,9 billion for the social sector, according to the latest GIFE Census—a biennial survey that provides an overview of the resources, structure, modes of operation, and strategies of companies, corporate, family, and independent institutes and foundations that allocate private resources to public-facing projects.

"Without a doubt, donating financial resources – grantmaking – to civil society organizations and initiatives has increasingly proven to be one of the most important ways to contribute to their strengthening before, during, and after the pandemic. Thematic and community funds, and community foundations that make up the Philanthropy Network for Social Justice (RFJS) certainly occupy a strategic place in supporting the struggle for recognition and access to rights, in a broad sense, led by groups, collectives, and movements working with political minorities," comments Graciela Hopstein, executive coordinator of the Philanthropy Network for Social Justice.
