The independent fund for the promotion of Productive Eco-social Landscapes (PPP-ECOS), in partnership with the C&A Institute, has selected six projects for the Cotton Grant, which aims to strengthen the production chains of this crop in Northwest Minas Gerais. Now, the selected projects must provide the required documents to begin their activities. Later this month, they will participate in a project management training workshop promoted by PPP-ECOS.
The selected initiatives will be developed in five municipalities in the Northwest region of Minas Gerais, and are aligned with the principles of PPP-ECOS, such as income generation, keeping young people in rural areas, food and nutritional security, and gender equality. In addition, the projects include capacity-building workshops that will contribute to strengthening local organizations and the political leadership of the groups involved. The total investment in the projects is 800 reais.
“These initiatives aim to strengthen the cotton production chain, which is a traditional crop for family farming in the region. Furthermore, it will value the knowledge of spinning and dyeing with plants from the Cerrado. In these projects, cotton cultivation will be revived in agroecological consortia, which will enrich agroecosystems, promote quality of life, and strengthen local organizations,” comments Jessica Pedreira, technical advisor at ISPN.

Regarding the selection:
The call for proposals opened in July and was publicized through ISPN and Instituto C&A media outlets. Interested parties had two months to submit their proposals. In September, a team of ISPN advisors from the environmental and humanities fields, along with the National Management Committee of the PPP-ECOS, composed of representatives from various sectors, met to evaluate and select each proposal in three stages, culminating in the selection of six projects.
