In total, R$ 3 million will be invested in eco-social projects in the Caatinga and Cerrado biomes.
Four proposals were selected in the 34th PPP-ECOS call for proposals to support strategic projects in the Cerrado and Caatinga biomes, across four landscapes in the states of Minas Gerais, Pernambuco, Piauí, and Bahia. Each selected organization will implement a US$150 project aimed at improving the resilience of these landscapes. The projects will begin development this year and continue until 2025.

“With the support of PPP-ECOS, organizations will be able to contribute to sustainable development combined with the conservation of the biomes' natural resources. Given the accelerated process of environmental degradation, both in the Cerrado and the Caatinga, strengthening initiatives like this is essential for considering local impacts that add to global impacts for climate balance and social justice,” comments Jessica Pedreira, technical advisor at ISPN.
The four areas of focus for the projects are located in Western Bahia (BA) and the Upper Jequitinhonha Valley (MG), within the Cerrado biome, and, within the Caatinga biome, in the Upper Poti River (PI) and Sertão do Pajeú (PE). These four regions are experiencing different levels of environmental degradation and social vulnerability. Between 2015 and 2021, for example, more than 50 hectares of native vegetation were deforested in Western Bahia alone, according to data released by the “Tamo de Olho” initiative, of which ISPN is a part. However, they possess diverse cultural, economic, and social potential, which is why investment in these regions is essential.
With a focus on environmental conservation through the sustainable use of landscapes, the eco-social projects to be supported in these biomes confront the disordered development model that generates environmental degradation and social insecurity. "We want these regions and landscapes to prove resilient, to stand out as examples of community initiatives that engage with socio-environmental issues and need to be encouraged," adds Pedreira.
Planned actions
The actions to be implemented by the projects include training and technical assistance activities in agroecology, agro-extractive practices, territory management, among other topics, as well as the creation of dialogue platforms among diverse actors on important issues for each landscape, promotion of social participation, and monitoring and influencing public policies.
