Thirty-one projects were selected, which will receive a total of R$ 6,45 million, a resource from the Amazon Fund.
The 29th call for proposals from the Fund for the Promotion of Productive Eco-social Landscapes (PPP-ECOS), of ISPN, has just announced the projects selected in its selection process. Funded by the Amazon Fund, PPP-ECOS will support initiatives in three states of the Legal Amazon – Mato Grosso, Tocantins, and Maranhão – that bring sustainable ideas and practices to environmental conservation through the sustainable use of natural resources. In total, R$ 6,45 million in investments will be made by the selected organizations.
Understand the trajectory of the call for proposals:
The call for proposals was launched in February 2021 and closed in May. In June, the National Management Committee (CGN) selected the proposals, and in August, the selected projects were sent to the Amazon Fund and approved by the Department of Environment and Management of the Amazon Fund on November 30, 2021. This concluded the project selection process.
During this period, there was intense mobilization to hold 10 workshops to publicize the call for proposals, with guidance on developing Eco-social projects. These occasions were strategic for organizations with questions about the process and to present the new project submission platform, which is now entirely virtual.
The 31 projects selected in this call for proposals are divided into three categories, each with a maximum proposal value, although proposals do not always adhere to this limit. Below is the number of projects per category:

“Unlike the previous call for proposals, which used a different process to select strategic projects, these have already been selected. We realized that administrative procedures, including environmental licensing, significantly delayed the start of activities for the strategic projects, which have different characteristics because they also operate in the territory with the goal of promoting and assisting other projects in that region,” explains Rodrigo Noleto, coordinator of the ISPN Amazon Program.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the National Management Committee of PPP-ECOS, whose members are volunteers, public servants, and members of civil society, and who have carried out more than three selection processes this year alone, with 62 projects selected in total (TICCAs, Amazonia, and Ceres). We also thank the Department of Environment and Management of the Amazon Fund, which has been a true partner in facing the challenges imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic and in attempting to streamline procedures with public agencies. Finally, we thank all the organizations that submitted their proposals, including those that were not selected in this stage, because it is essential to continue believing, as only in this way can we be more united, strong, and just!”, comments Noleto.

Understand the next steps:
From now on, the selected organizations will receive a notification from ISPN so that they can provide documents and clarifications, a measure requested by the National Management Committee (CGN) of PPP-ECOS. The Institute will also carry out the bureaucratic procedures with the environmental agencies (federal, state and/or municipal) for the environmental licensing processes. The projects will only be contracted after the issuance of environmental licenses and the absence of objections from the competent government agencies, for example, Incra, ICMBio, Funai, among others that are related to the project activities.
Training workshops are still planned before the start of the implementation of the selected proposals. Each initiative will be accompanied by an ISPN focal point, who will assist with all the described procedures and will be side-by-side in the development of the actions.
Summary of the PPP-ECOS project in the Legal Amazon – phase 2
In this second phase of the PPP-ECOS project in the Amazon, 151 projects supported by resources from the Amazon Fund will be included (88 projects in the first phase 2013-2018 and 63 projects in phase 2, currently underway). Across all these phases, nearly R$ 19 million will be transferred to community organizations, to be applied directly by these organizations, with autonomous management by the associations and cooperatives, which learn to execute the resources, meet goals, manage and present their results. This is one of the great results of the PPP-ECOS strategy: to make community organizations competent in the execution of their projects, demonstrating that they are capable and can face any challenge to improve the life of their organization, generate income and conserve natural resources!
About the PPP-ECOS Fund
The promotion of Eco-Social Productive Landscapes (PPP-ECOS) is the main strategy adopted by ISPN in the search for development with social equity and environmental balance. To make this strategy viable, the Institute manages an independent Fund that raises and allocates resources to projects of community organizations that work for environmental conservation through the sustainable use of natural resources, generating economic and social benefits. Today, the PPP-ECOS Fund's portfolio of financiers includes the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Amazon Fund/BNDES, the Laudes Foundation, the European Union and the German Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU).
“This strategy, tested and consolidated over 25 years of history, unites the conservation of natural resources with sustainable and responsible development, so that family farmers and traditional peoples and communities remain in the countryside with dignity, with their production valued and access to markets” – Rodrigo Noleto.
